Stephen Colbert to get own show
(link is New York Times - subscription required)
Comedy Central said yesterday that it was giving Mr. Colbert his own show: a half-hour that is expected to follow "The Daily Show" on weeknights and will lampoon those cable-news shows that are dominated by the personality and sensibility of a single host. Think, he said, of Bill O'Reilly and Chris Matthews and Sean Hannity.
Sounds awesome. I can't wait.

As much as I love Stephen Colbert, I don't have high hopes for his own show. Offshoot shows focusing predominatly on a character usually fails..because it's just too much of one person. Much like the SNL movies, Michael Richards (aka Kramer) detective show, and Rick Mercer.
It's just that the reason why Colbert works is because of everyone else working together well. But who knows? Instead of being "Stuart Smiley Saves his Family", it'll be a "Wayne's World".

I think that it'll work because Colbert is so good at being mock serious all the time. Instead of being chummy like Stewart, I see the show being an extension of the Daily Show's on the road bits, only done live, and possibly with more guests trying to bite off each other's heads. How they'll manage to do that for 30 miunutes is anybody's guess.

Maybe Colbert'll bring his hilarious Daily Show segment "This Week in God" over to his show, like former Daily Show host Craig Kilborn did by taking his "5 Questions" bit with him to his spot on the Late Late Show.

Yeah, I imagine it being like long correspondent stories where they have the interviews. Colbert will do well pretending to be an O'Reilly or Matthews. If he can keep it up for 22 minutes is the real question.

I'd be very suprised if Colbert did his "This Week in God" segment on his new show. It seems to me that the show's going to be dedicated to talking heads. Stuff like that would seem outta place, assuming that they don't have correspondent pieces. Time will tell, I suppose.

I would love to see this in a Larry Sanders format, so you see Stephen Colbert being his mock serious behind the scenes, or as he studies his "news" and sources.

Nah, it's already been done. On Larry Sanders for starters, and to an extent on I'm Alan Partridge.
